The surreal beauty of Matera
Declared a UNESCO heritage site since 1993, Matera represents one of the most surreal locations in the
world: a city, in its oldest part, built entirely on the rock, in which caves from ancient formations have been
transformed into homes, luxury accommodation facilities, art museums, or even archaeological sites for
tourists and visitors.
The charm of Matera, recognized as European Capital of Culture in 2019, goes far beyond titles and awards.
Its scenarios, its unique settings and its famous "stones" are only the prelude to a city frozen in time, in
which nature, architecture and human ability represent their maximum expression.
The old city is characterized by its formation starting from a rocky surface and is nicknamed "city of stones":
it is in fact divided into two different areas, that of Sasso Caveoso and that of Sasso Barisano. Visiting
Matera means witnessing and exploring the first Paleolithic human settlements in the area, means getting
lost and falling in love with its varied conformation, made up of caves, museums, as well as small shops and
breathtaking terraces. It is the city you deserve to see at least once in your life.
How the tour is structured
The city tour starts right from the central square of Matera, capable of offering unique views and a spectacular overview of the Matera Sassi.
The itinerary continues going up step by step the paths and streets that lead to the Civita and the Cathedral which, in a position of absolute importance compared to the starting point, dominates the city from above and offers unique emotions.
In addition to visiting and exploring the Sassi, discovering the cave houses, the breathtaking views and the unique atmosphere of the city, the tour will allow you to come into contact with the bread of Matera, one of the symbols of the city's poor cuisine, making you discover the best bakeries where you can taste local specialties.
The tour lasts approximately 3 hours.
Price €300 for up to 6 people.
